We Can, We Did, and We will.

WeCAN WORKED.

The WeCAN paid canvassing initiative was a success. The objective of this project was to hire and train local canvassers to work in carefully selected swing districts with vulnerable incumbents and strong challengers. Through this project, we knocked 42,300 doors in support of 10 candidates across North Carolina, of whom 5 won: In Wake County, Terence Everitt won a House seat and Mary Wills Bode and Sydney Batch won Senate seats. In newly drawn districts in the Mecklenburg/Cabarrus area, Diamond Staton-Williams and Laura Budd both won their races for NC House. Diamond’s win by 628 votes is especially exciting because Cabarrus County has elected Republican legislators in the past few cycles.

CLOSE RACES

In close races, direct voter contact is the most effective tool campaigns have, and it is also the hardest thing to do at scale. The results show we were working with the right candidates in the right places. The collaboration between County-to-County and the campaigns succeeded: dozens of locally hired and well-trained canvassers were out across the state on each of the final 30 days before the election, talking with voters identified by the campaigns as key strategic targets. And while we are disappointed about the losses of Cheri Beasley, our judicial candidates, and some amazing incumbent legislators – we are proud of the work that we were able to do.

Building Democratic power in North Carolina is a long game, and there is clearly much more work to be done. WeCAN demonstrated a model for working together that reached thousands of voters statewide. We believe that this type of grassroots organizing is the way forward. We will be conducting a thorough evaluation of our work, using both qualitative input from canvassers, campaigns, county parties, and other principals and quantitative data analysis. Stay tuned!

Thank you so much to everyone who supported WeCAN with financial resources, time, and energy. Your investment has made the difference in the outlook for North Carolina over the next two years.
